Kävin hyvin pikaisesti Arkadian Alkossa tänään ja näin pari Bristol Spiritsin rommi-uutuutta siellä hyllyssä.
Port Morant 1990, finished in Port casks, 46%
Reserve rum of Nicaragua 1998, 46%
Port Morantille on kertynyt jonkinverran hintaa, enkä tiedä miten tuo Port-viimeistely on rommiin vaikuttanut - toivottavasti lopputulos on hyvä (eiköhän). Nicaraguan rommi on siis noin 9-vuotiasta, aika edullinen ostos sinänsä. Mielenkiinnolla odotan maistelunuotteja..

Oulussa näkyi keskustan kulmilla olevan tuota Nicaragualaista hyllyssä ja oli myös Agnostura 8 yo. Lappu hyllyn reunassa kertoo tuon jälkimmäisen olevan tilausvalikoiman tuote, joten kuinka kauan sitten hyllyssä seisoskelee tuo.

Vapautin yhden Nicaragualaisen Viikin Alkon hyllyjen ikeestä.

Takaetiketti kertoo seuraavaa:
"Tha balance of bouquet and unique flavours is derived from a blend of aged rums of between 6 and 23 years old, originating from the "Sistem Solera" aging process. These mature rums have been produced only from the sweetest first-crush virgin sucar cane honey. Ron Zacapa 23 is matured at an altitude of 2300 meters in selected barrels that previously aged robust Bourbons, delicate Sherries and fine Pedro Ximenez wines."

Aivan.
Diageo on ostanut Ron Zacapan brändeihinsä, sekin on saattanut vaikuttaa tuohon ikämerkintäasiaan.
WIRSPA West Indies Rum and Spirit Producers Association) on uusi katto-organisaatio Karibian alueen rommituottajille, ja tätä kautta yritetään luoda yhteiset pelisäännöt ainakin siihen liittyvien romminvalmistajien kesken. "The Greater Caribbean This Week
Norman Girvan
In Port of Spain last week, the ACS headquarters was the scene of a most unusual encounter. Representatives of 13 countries in the Greater Caribbean were talking about rum-and tasting it in its wide variety of regional expressions.
Caribbean people like to think of themselves as experts on the spirit, for good historical reasons. Many would be surprised at the fact that what is defined as rum is by no means unambiguous.
For instance, although in most Latin American and Caribbean countries a base of cane sugar is essential to the definition of rum, there is at least one where "rum" can be a spirit based on plain distilled alcohol. Or take the matter of the alcoholic strength that rum can be sold at. This is defined as 38-54 percent by volume at 20 degrees centigrade in Brazil. In Chile and Venezuela the minimum is 40 percent, while in Colombia it is 50 percent.
Age requirements of rum under national regulations also differ. The minimum is eight months in Mexico, one year in the Dominican Republic and two years in Venezuela and Peru. After one year in Barbados it qualifies as Matured rum; after two years in Mexico it is anejo --a term widely used in Hispanic countries to refer to a rum of superior quality, like Old or Reserve Rum in the Anglophone countries.
To complicate matters the types of rum recognized by national regulations is by no means uniform. In Argentina there is White, Gold, Light and Extra Light. In Barbados there is White, Overproof and Matured; in Brazil rum is Light, Heavy or Aged; in Mexico it is Aged, Reserve or Flavored; and in Peru it is either Amber or White. In the United States there is Rum, Rum Liqueur and Flavored Rum.
In the view of the West Indies Rum and Spirit Producers Association (WIRSPA) such wide differences in rum definitions and categories could act as a serious non-tariff barrier for the product when the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) comes into force. Market access would be restricted, seriously reducing the benefits from trade liberalization.
In the worst case, failure to agree on a common definition would open the way for imposter spirits masquerading as rum to make their appearance, like the infamous Rum Verschnitt now recognized in the EU, a spirit which Caribbean rum connoisseurs consider unworthy of the name.
WIRSPA is proposing the adoption of a simple, common definition of rum to be used in the FTAA. It points to precedents in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the Canada-Chile FTA, which adopted agreed definitions of Tequila, Canadian Whisky, Bourbon, Tennessee Whisky and Pisco.
The definition proposed by WIRSPA was discussed at last week's meeting at the ACS. Essentially, it would preserve the character of rum as a uniquely sugar-cane based product, exclude non-sugar cane based products from qualifying as rum, and preserve the sovereign right of countries that are parties to the FTAA to impose additional requirements on their domestic rums.
The meeting, held under the aegis of the ACS Trade Committee, was hailed by WIRSPA as a great success. More exhaustive information will be collected on national rum standards and definitions, and countries are to hold internal consultations with their respective industries to discuss the WIRSPA proposal.
And appropriately, it ended with a rum-tasting exercise in which each country's delegates were both contributors and participants.

UK: WIRSPA unveils rum "marque of provenance"
28 April 2008 | Source: just-drinks.com editorial team
The West Indies Rum & Spirits Producers Association (WIRSPA) has readied a new "marque of provenance" for rums from the Caribbean.
The trade body, which represents spirits producers, including Angostura, Mount Gay and Brugal & Co., from 15 Caribbean territories, unveiled the marque late last week.
The marque will be used as a "visual symbol of provenance and quality, designed to help trade and consumers identify" brands from represented producers, the association said.
Following the launch of the logo, the WIRSPA is hoping to introduce a three-tier classification system for its members' rums. A black and white version of the marque will appear on 'Authentic Caribbean Rum', produced from sugar cane or molasses within Africa, Caribbean and Pacific region, while a silver and black version would be used on rums from the region matured for a minimum of one year. A gold and black certification will signify 'Deluxe Authentic Caribbean Rum', for rums matured for five years or more.
"With the popularity of rum increasing year-on-year, there is no doubt that consumers are not only looking to explore brands, but are also seeking some help in the selection process," said Neil Morris, WIRSPA's head of marketing. "The new ACR marque will, e believe, help meet both these objectives, while also helping to give further weight to the development of a distinct Authentic Caribbean Rum sector within the rum category."
The logo will be backed by a marketing campaign, initially in the UK, including trade and consumer press advertising, bartender training and PR support. The campaign, which will cost EUR10m (US$19.9m) between now and 2009, will also spread to Italy and Spain in the coming months."
